The Rich Text Format, designated by the file extension RTF, incorporates basic typographic styling and word-processing features in a document standard that many applications can read. From typeface and size to color and style, none of that formatting carries over to Microsoft Excel. To transform RTF into a document you can import into Excel, start by opening and analyzing your file, looking for the kinds of data that a spreadsheet program can understand, then edit your file to make it work when you open it in Excel.
Open your RTF file in WordPad, available by expanding the Windows Start menu and typing "wordpad" in the search box. Scroll through your text and familiarize yourself with the file contents.
Remove all formatting except for tabs and carriage returns. Delete any graphics embedded in the file.
Delete any tabs that aren"t used to separate pieces of information that would appear in different columns in a spreadsheet. Insert tabs to break up your data where you need column breaks. Use carriage returns to separate what will become individual spreadsheet rows.
Click on WordPad"s blue menu button and choose "Save As" to specify the file name and type for the version of the document you"ll open in Microsoft Excel. Set the file format to Text.
Open the File in Microsoft Excel. The program detects the tab delimiters that separate your soon-to-be columns and presents the Import Text Wizard, which asks you if you want to open the file accordingly. Look through the data and confirm that you added the proper number of tabs to even out each row. Click on the "Finish" button to complete the transformation from RTF to text and on to Excel.
Tips
- As you scroll through your input text in the Import Text Wizard, halt the import process and edit the file again if you spot problems with the numbers of columns or other inconsistencies that will disrupt your data transformation.
- Set data types in the Import Text Wizard for those columns you know will contain only one type of information, for example dates, numbers or text.
- Use find and replace to change predictable types of content or formatting quickly as you turn RTF into TXT.

- Examine your spreadsheet after you import your text to verify that you didn"t miss any problems with your column alignments.
