When to get gloxinia from a dark place? How to wake up gloxinia tuberous? Gloxinia begonia does not wake up what to do

When growing varietal gloxinia, you have to deal with different planting material. In my collection, a new variety usually appears with an unrooted leafy cuttings.

A few years ago, I rooted the resulting sheet and waited a long time for the children to appear. This could take from several months to a year. In addition, very often the leaf dried out, and since the tuber did not have a sprout, I put it away for storage. However, not all nodules survived it safely, as they were small and were not always stored correctly.

Now I have developed a small technology that allows guaranteed to germinate even the smallest (for example, 5 mm.) Gloxinia nodules, regardless of the season, and achieve flowering 3-4 months after the appearance of the sprout.

HOW TO WAKE A GLOXINIA STEM?

For example, I took the rooted leaves that were planted about 3 months ago. One leaf is still completely healthy and strong (it can be rooted anew), the second has begun to rot in the greenhouse, so it cannot be used for re-rooting.

The first stage: Carefully break off the tuber from the leaf. This can be done with your hands, anyone who is not confident in their abilities can use a sharp knife.

Second stage: Thoroughly wash the tubers from soil residues under warm running water. We observe the following picture: two young nodules about 2 cm and 1 cm in diameter, with no signs of growth.

Third stage: We prepare a small new cup (50 or 100 ml) and pour coconut substrate there, lightly (! It is light so that the substrate is only slightly moist), place the nodules on top and squeeze a little.

The fourth stage: A glass with a nodule is placed in an airtight greenhouse. I am using a zipper. It must be completely new in order to prevent possible fungal diseases.

Fifth stage: We put on germination under fluorescent lamps, the distance from the top of the greenhouse to the lamps is 10-20 cm. After a week, the nodules must be checked: if there is no condensation in the greenhouse, it is necessary to slightly moisten the coconut substrate. Ventilate or water the nodules is not required.

As a rule, after 2-3 weeks, good strong young leaves appear from the tuber, which needs to be grown for another 1-2 weeks, maybe a little more. This will depend on the variety and size of the nodule.

PRINCIPAL ADVANTAGES OF SUCH SPRING METHOD:

- You can quickly get flowering plants
- The safety of the variety increases, because there is no need to “lay” the nodules at rest when it is still too small.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER, TO EVERYTHING RECEIVED:

- You can use only new glasses and greenhouses, because the tuber in a dormant state is easily susceptible to fungal diseases. Clean dishes to avoid them
- Heat and light for germination. Fluorescent lamps give an ideal combination of heat and light, if you only have a windowsill, germination of nodules can be done only in the spring-summer season. In this case, it is necessary to provide soft diffused light (not direct sunlight) and heat.
- Neutral substrate for germination. I use coke, vermiculite and sphagnum moss are also suitable. But I think coconut is preferable, because it is optimal in retaining moisture.

A feature of tuberous gloxinia is that they need rest after abundant flowering. Each year, with the onset of autumn, the flowers "hibernate" and remain in this state until the end of winter. With the advent of spring, growth processes begin to activate in the tubers, and soon a green bush appears in the pot again.

However, often flower growers are faced with such a problem that it is already outside the window, and there is no hint of awakening. What to do in this case and how to wake up the gloxinia tuberous, the flower masters know and are happy to share their experiences.

Before May, it is not necessary to “force” the tuber, since the flower still has the opportunity to wake up on its own.

Based on practice, you can wake up a tuber in two ways:

  • converting the pot into a greenhouse (without removing the tuber from the pot);
  • putting it in a bag.

Both methods of awakening are also good for tubers (sleeping) newly acquired in spring.

Awakening in a pot

To gloxinia came to life, the flowerpot must be moved to the warmest and brightest place in the house and slightly moisten the ground, pouring water not under the tuber, but along the edge of the container.

It is not necessary to fill the flower too much, otherwise the tuber will rot.

Cover the top of the pot with a bag and leave it for two weeks. This time should be enough for the sprouts to appear.

Awakening in a package

Before placing the tuber in a bag, it must be carefully inspected for rot. If one is found, the affected areas should be removed by sprinkling a slice with crushed activated carbon.

Then dry the gloxinia. Pour a couple tablespoons of light and loose soil into the bag itself and gently spray it from the spray bottle.

Instead of substrate, peat can be used.

Lay the nodule on the soil mixture and close the bag well so that it does not let out air. Put on a light and warm windowsill, and even better - under. Ventilate and moisten additionally is not necessary.

This method allows you to get several sprouts from one nodule at once, which are easily separated and used as independent plants.

Video on how to wake a sleeping gloxinia

Gloxinia, or, more correctly, syningia, is a perennial plant that requires a mandatory dormant period at the end of the growing season. Usually the flowers go on vacation in September - October, which coincides with the onset of the dry period in their homeland - in South America. If gloxinia does not want to fall asleep on time, it is better for her to help in this, so that the flowering dates are not violated at the most favorable time for this, that is, in the spring-summer months, when the plant receives it in a sufficient amount very sensitive to the amount of lighting.

To put gloxinia to sleep on time, it is necessary from the beginning of autumn, as soon as flowering ends, gradually reduce watering, and daylight hours will become shorter by itself. When the aboveground part finally dries out and gives the tuber all the maximum nutrients, it must be removed, leaving only 1-1.5 cm above the soil surface. The tubers themselves must be thoroughly cleaned from the ground and treated with a fungicide solution. Then we place them in a dry, dark and cool place with good ventilation, after pouring it with sawdust or vermiculite. The optimal storage temperature of gloxinia is in the range from +8 to + 12 ... 15 ° C depending on the amount of moisture in the environment. During storage, tubers should be periodically sprayed and checked to see if they are awake.

New Year's video recipe:

If you do everything right, then your gloxinia will wake up no earlier than in January - February. True, sometimes it happens that if any storage conditions are violated, the tubers wake up earlier than the scheduled time or do not want to fall asleep at all. What to do in this case? A lot depends on the age of the plant and the size of the tubers.

If your gloxinia is still first year, then worry about the fact that she does not fall asleep, not worth it. For young flowers with small (up to 2 cm in diameter) tubers, this is normal. Just in the winter, she will have to pay more attention, finishing up to the required 12-14 hours. But the flower will grow and grow a good tuber over the winter. But plants with large tubers (more than 2 cm) are better to send to rest.

If a flower stands in the winter on a windowsill without additional lighting, then it is likely that it will stretch out a lot. To avoid this, you must either try to lower the temperature to +18 ° C, or cut off an already grown stem at the end of February, leaving only the lower foliage.

When ahead of time, i.e., having not rested for two, or rather three months, an adult gloxinia wakes up, then there may be several scenarios of its further existence:

  • Remove the shoots that have appeared and again remove the tuber to where he had rested before. In the spring, with an increase in the period of natural illumination, drop it in a container with a new substrate and place it in a warm and bright place.
  • If the sprouts that appear are still very small, it will be enough not to remove them, but simply to further limit the amount of moisture obtained.
  • You can, by planting gloxinia in fresh soil, illuminate it with lamps, but then you run the risk of getting a very thinning weak plant, as the flower does not treat artificial light very well. If this happens, you need to remove the top of the stem at the end of February, leaving only the lower foliage. The cut tops are rooted, and gloxinia will grow new shoots and become only more magnificent.
  • The fourth option involves the growth of gloxinia in cooler (+18 ° C) conditions under fairly good natural light, when the flower growth is not so intense.

Gloxinia is a tuberous houseplant with a pronounced dormant period, which raises the question: how to wake up gloxinia for planting?

Gloxinia rest period: the rest period for gloxinia lasts from 2 to 5 months. Usually it falls on October-March or February-March.

How to store gloxinia tubers: store at a temperature of 15 ° C as much as possible. Comfortable air temperature for storage from 12 ° С to 15 ° С.

How to wake up gloxinia tuber:

  • Awaken evenly all parts of the tuber;
  • Take into account the period of emergence of young shoots;
  • Move to a warm place;
  • Adjust watering;

The gloxinia tuber before planting or transplanting, as it turned out, needs to be woken up, otherwise there will be no effect from the procedure. Gloxinia tuber wakes up unevenly - some parts may sprout, while others will sleep for several months. General procedures for waking up gloxinia tuberum will be:

  • move the pot of tubers to a warm place,
  • start watering the soil mixture, but do not overmoisten;
  • do not pour water on the tuber itself;
  • cover with plastic wrap for 10 days;

As soon as the green shoots appear, you can shoot the film that created the greenhouse effect. Another method to wake up a tuberous gloxinia:

  1. take a transparent, rectangular bag that closes on top;
  2. pour a third of the soil mixture;
  3. moisten a little with water;
  4. put the tuber in the middle;
  5. close the package;

The same greenhouse effect is created as in the previous version. You can periodically open the bag to ventilate the gloxinia tuber. Thus, tuberous gloxinia can be woken up completely and all parts will shoot.

What to do with tuberous gloxinia after waking up?

After gloxinia tuberous to awaken, you need to put it in a nutrient substrate. General substrate criteria for tuber gloxinia: loose, with good aeration, light, nutritious.

The composition of the substrate for gloxinia tuber:

  • peat;
  • perlite;
  • vermiculitis;

Pot selection for planting gloxinia at home:

  • focus on the gloxinia tuber volumes;
  • to plant tubers up to 2 cm in volume in a plastic cup;
  • plant a tuber up to 4 cm in a 9 cm pot;
  • large tubers from 4 cm - in a pot from 9 cm;
  • children / daughter tubers should be planted in cups and then transplanted into a 9 cm diameter pot;

Gloxinia tuber does not deepen too much - just 1 cm into the soil mixture. On the sides it is slightly sprinkled with earth. Young, green shoots should be on the surface. In the period after the tuberous gloxinia is awakened, care should be adjusted.

How to care for an awakened tuberous gloxinia:

  • regularly water in small portions of water;
  • drain excess water from the pan;
  • pour water along the edge of the pot without aiming at the tuber;
  • seed tubers (daughter) in other containers;

How to wake up gloxinia tubers

Gloxinia tubers should have a rest period and be in a state of sleep 3-4 months a year. This period may be shorter or longer; it usually occurs in the autumn-winter months. But you have a gloxinia tuber that sleeps for a very long time and does not wake up, although it is alive and well. Worried about a tuber waking up or not?
Do not worry about not spilling gloxinia tubers if they are healthy. In due time, they themselves will wake up. Or do you want to try waking up sleeping tubers?
Gloxinia tubers awaken well in plastic bags with a clasp (as in the photo below). If you do not have such a bag, then you can use a regular transparent cellophane bag.
At the bottom of the package, put 1 - 2 tablespoons of moist "light" peat-based soil. The soil in the bag can be slightly sprayed with water.
Before placing the tuber in a bag, it is advisable to wash it in water and inspect so that it does not rot. If the tuber is healthy, then dry it and place in a bag.
Close the bag tightly or fasten it if you use the bag without a fastener. Put the tuber bag in a warm place (+24 - +26 degrees Celsius) and in a very bright place. Good - on a rack under the lamps, if any. If you do not have a shelf, then on a well-lit window sill. It is not necessary to aerate the bag and additionally moisten the soil in it.

Awakening gloxinia.

Gloxinia do not wake up simultaneously, most of the tubers produce young sprouts in February-March, and some can oversleep until May. If in May the tuber did not release sprouts, it can be woken up. To do this, the pot in which the tuber was stored in the winter, you need to put in a warm, lit place, water the soil. It is very important during this period not to pour the tuber, as in very wet soil, the tuber can rot. You can only slightly moisten the soil along the edge of the pot, avoiding water entering the tuber. After watering, cover the pot with a transparent bag. If the tuber is healthy, then it usually germinates within 10-15 days.

You can wake up gloxinia tubers in another way:

Place the sleeping tuber in a transparent bag with a little damp earth. Place the bag in a lighted place. After a while, the tuber releases young shoots.

Awakened tubers must be transplanted into fresh nutrient soil. Before transplanting, you need to carefully remove the tuber from the old soil, shake it off the ground, inspect. If dark spots or rot spots are found, the tuber should be washed with running water, the damaged areas should be removed with a clean clean knife and soaked in Fundazole solution for 20 minutes. After processing the tuber, it is necessary to dry and sprinkle the places of the slices with crushed coal. After planting the tuber in fresh soil.

You should not deepen the tuber by more than 1 cm, it can only be lightly sprinkled with earth. It is not necessary to fill up the young sprout with soil, it must remain on the surface.

At the beginning of growth, the plant is watered very sparingly, avoiding soil moisture. Watering is done along the edge of the pot, avoiding water entering the tuber.

Sometimes on adult tubers during transplantation, you can find small daughter nodules. They can be carefully separated and planted in small glasses. Thus, you can get a little baby that will bloom in the first year of life.

Choosing a gloxinia tuber pot.

The size of the pot mainly depends on the size of the gloxinia tuber. I plant small nodules about 1-2 cm in plastic cups, for a medium tuber 3-4 cm in size, a pot of 7-9 cm is suitable, and adult tubers I plant in pots whose diameter is 3-4 cm larger than the size of the tuber .

You should not immediately plant a small nod in a large pot, because there is a possibility of waterlogging and acidification of the soil, which can lead to the death of the nodule.

After the little baby grows up, and the root system has fully mastered the earthen lump in the glass, it can be transferred to another pot with a diameter of 7-9 cm.
